In the past few years the concept of a mastermind has really taken off. More and more entrepreneurs and leaders participate in a mastermind or formulate one themselves.

Moments before launching my own mastermind I would like you to consider the following observations:

Your startup (company) is YOUR mastermind.

What do i mean by that?

Well let’s first consider what is a mastermind, what are the expectations and what are the objectives of a mastermind?

  1. What is a mastermind? Typically a mastermind is a group of people that come from different backgrounds and fields and have a shared common denominator – wanting to belong to a group that helps them advance in life (personal gain and personal contribution to the team effort)
  2. What are the expectations from a mastermind group? Typically it would be to participate at least in 85% of the meetings, be an active contributor that provides value to the team, is willing to help any member and feels free to share their darkest secrets with the team members.
  3. What are the objectives of a mastermind? Typically it would be to help one another advance in life. This could include personal growth, financial growth, spiritual growth, among others.

The similarities between participating in a mastermind and working on a project or startup are very prominent.

Typically founding teams share a passion about a problem the are trying to solve, they are fully committed to helping one another prevail and get through unimaginable hurdles and obstacles on the way to success. They are willing to put in the extra work, coach and advise one another, wear professional, social, mentor and therapists hats as needed in order to help propel themselves, colleagues and ultimately the company into a better and brighter future.

The people you surround yourself with are the ones you will depended on to help you achieve your goals and reach company milestones. They have direct impact on your product, marketing, sales, technology, content, company culture and bringing in their friends to work with you. They will onboard new hires, recruit clients and partners on your behalf. Speak your messaging and represent your brand.

So, next time you are choosing your partners, employees, advisors and even investors – ask yourself – how would you feel if they were part of your mastermind?
